Often, at the same time I make art, my children make-believe.
It can hardly be a coincidence that my art is so much about this magical time of dreaming, dressing up, imagination and make-believe. It swirls around my studio/their playroom just as they do in their princess dresses, silk butterfly wings and felted crowns and capes. Their make believe is infectious and it can’t help but make it’s way onto my canvas.
Just the expression ‘make-believe’ is inspirational. Making it real by believing it to be so. Believing it into existence. Three years ago I decided to make my make-believe a reality. Some days are easier than others but I make-believe everyday. I take a blank canvas and I believe it into reality. Make believe is magic time, to make something where nothing existed before is magic.
Art is magic.
Children are magic.
The imaginations is magic.
Go on, I dare you to stop worrying about looking silly, put on your felted crown and cape, and make some magic happen.
Go on….
Make.
Believe.

This was really hard to take a photo of. It is actually very symmetrical. The photo is distorted on the right side making the one girl smaller than the other. They are actually the exact same size.The colour is also darker on the left than it actually is.
I love painting on these unique sized canvases but documenting them kinda stinks.

We have all experienced dream crushers in our life. Those people that think it is their job to inform us that are dreams are impractical or unrealistic. Growing up working for my parents at their small Inn in Victoria, I met many people, strangers really , the felt that it was up to them to tell me that my desire to be an artist was just plain silly.
‘Art is hobby’ one couple told my sixteen year old self as I poured them coffee for breakfast.
It is amazing to me, when I think back, at how many people told me this. It got to the point that I stopped telling people what I was studying or what my goals were.
Their comments did not changed my desire to be an artist but they did make me feel that it was perhaps a hopeless dream. After all, how do you BECOME an artist? Sure you can go to college and university but let me tell you a little secret, it is not much different there. My professors may have well been those people that I served at sixteen. They were actually teaching us that being an artist for a living was a crazy idea and not only THAT, but if you did manage to make an living as an artist, it must mean that you have sold out.
HUH?
It is no surprise that I remained confused about my desire to be an artist for a very long time. Until I turned forty, actually.
What changed when I turned forty? I was able to turn off those dream crusher voices in my head and realize that the way to become an artist is to create art. As often as possible. End of story. There is no great mystery here. Maybe I am not making as much money as some one with a ‘real job’ but holey moley, I am doing something that I LOVE TO DO.
There is value in that.
There is joy in that.
There is something so SACRED about that.
The thing that makes me so crazy is that, as a parent, I work so hard to cultivate and encourage my children’s dreams and yet one person can come along and destroy it all with a few ‘helpful’ words. So remember, next time a young person tells you what they want to do with their life, just listen, bite your tongue if you have to. Don’t be a dream crusher, be a dream cultivator. *************************************************************************************************

Febuary Give Away!
OK, time to pick what this month’s OOAK reproduction give away will be! I have decided to go with this one titled ‘LOVE’…
…. and speaking of love, what candy do you love or have loved? Do you have a trashy favorite? A guilty pleasure?
I thought about this topic yesterday and then, lo and behold, someone asked Justin Bieber the same question and I knew, this had to be synchronicity. The clincher was that he mentioned MY guilty pleasure … I love bigfoot candies.
I know, not really classy but if the Biebster likes them how wrong can I be? (Don’t answer that).
My other favorite , maple sugar candies… I have always had a weakness for them ever since I was a kid.
Two more, white bon bon’s and licorice and sherbet from the British candy shop. (The Brit’s have great candy, let’s face it).

Love At First Sight

Ahhh, love at first sight.
I remember my first sight of my baby girls. It was instant love. I look at them now and I wish I could just make them small like that for one more instant. Just to hold them against me again when they were that small.
So instead, I grab them, wiggling and pulling, laughing and whining
‘Mamma, let go!’
and I hold them and kiss them for as long as they will allow.
I love them even more now,
at every sight.
