Substrate: wood cradle, 1.5” deep, side are red
Starting Bid: $300.00
Shipping in USA and Canada: $25.00
Description:
This is from a mixed media painting series that I did that was inspired by Magnolias and crows, two things that I love and are very much a part of growing up in Victoria BC. We don’t have Magnolia trees in Edmonton and even though my mother always tells me they ‘make such a mess!’, I miss them. Magnolias, you can mess my driveway with your beautiful waxy petals any day of the week! If I get to look at your beautiful flowers and amazing angular branches, then mess away! Crows are a bird that we have here but not as many (or as large) as we had on the island. We have magpies in Edmonton, they are lovely but crows and ravens have always drawn me in. As child in school we learnt about Haidas and the trickster raven always played such a prominent role in their story telling. They are so smart and cunning. I truly admire them and even though some people think of them as a bad omen I have always thought of them as a wise and highly spiritual bird.

“Whatever you are physically…male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy–all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.”

I love when the under painting can be seen peaking out from a painting. It is sometimes hard to know when to stop, to allow that push and pull to remain. To not over paint it. I feel this one accomplishes that really well.

Every Warrior of the Light has felt afraid of going into battle. Every Warrior of the Light has, at some time in the past, lied or betrayed someone. Every Warrior of the Light has trodden a path that was not his. Every Warrior of the Light has suffered for the most trivial of reasons. Every Warrior of the Light has, at least once, believed he was not a Warrior of the Light. Every Warrior of the Light has failed in his spiritual duties. Every Warrior of the Light has said ‘yes’ when he wanted to say ‘no.’ Every Warrior of the Light has hurt someone he loved. That is why he is a Warrior of the Light, because he has been through all this and yet has never lost hope of being better than he is.
~ Paulo Coelho Quotes from Warrior of the Light

“From the moment we are born, people tell us that the world is like this and like that, this way, that way. It is natural that – for a certain period of time – we end up believing what we are told. But we must soon push these ideas aside and discover our own way of living reality.”
― Paulo Coelho, Warrior of the Light

Description:
I have been through two operations and emerged victorious. I am on the road to recovery. My surgeon told me to have a nice life. It has been a year since I first found a lump. I have had two mastectomies and for those I will place two feathers in my hat. One for each operation. One for each breast. I am a warrior returning from my quest, I now have scars and raw emotions but I am stronger too. My feathers are a reminder of what I have been through because I am not quite ready to forget. I am not sure I ever will be.
A heart without dreams is like a bird without feathers.

I started doing this hat series earlier this year. I am not sure how it started. I had a photo of Imogen wearing a straw top hat from a few years ago and I decided to paint it but I made the hat much taller than it really was. This made me think of the Mad Hatter and also a magician’s hat. I love magic, I love imaginary worlds and fairytales …girls on an adventure … out there exploring the world in their magical top hats. And, remember, for every adventure, you get to put another feather in your hat!
