Our Souls

This is a 19″x6″ mixed media piece on black watercolour paper. This painting is flat and will need be matted and framed by you. (The photo makes the writing appear a bit off but it is actually quite straight on the real painting).  Available HERE

“He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”

Emily Bronte (Wuthering Heights)

I quite like this new black watercolour paper. I tried to not over paint on it so as to leave the black come through. I like how she has faint heart cheeks as this is such a romantic quote. I separate the quote from the book, however. When I think of this quote, I do not think of Catherine and Heathcliffe. I know I am an anomaly but I really didn’t like the character of Heathcliffe and so I had trouble  buying into their love story. I love Emily Bronte’s writing though, so beautiful, such a great storyteller and the idea that two souls are so connected makes me swoon.  Maybe I need to re-read the book, it has been over thirty years! No doubt I am wiser now, maybe I just didn’t GET it  the first go around.

The inspiration behind this painting:

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.”

Charlotte Brontë

This last week in Alberta, Canada we elected someone into power who is threatened by people who do not fit into a tidy neat little box.  It wasn’t a surprise to me, I knew Jason Kenney was going to get elected. For all of the time I have lived in Alberta, the conservatives have been in power. The last four years have a been an anomaly. I do not want to get political. I try to avoid it at all costs but this is not about politics. This is about human rights.

It hurts my heart to know that people from the LGBTQ community are worried and scared because the UCP have a majority government.  We have to stand up for these human beings, because it starts with taking away their rights  and ends with taking away all of our rights. No person, group or government should hold the power to take away  another’s free will.  We are all free… we are no birds … we are not ensnared in a net (YET) … we are free human beings with independent will.  We must stand together for this to remain true.  We must stand up against anyone that tries to impede that freedom for our fellow human beings. We cannot be silent.

Corseted Heart (Corsets 2019)

This is an 8″x 10″ mix media/ encaustic painting on wood. This painting is 1.5″ deep and has turquoise sides. This painting is available HERE in my Etsy shop or through me directly maria@mariapacewynters.com

The first night that Imogen had to put on  her brace for scoliosis  was truly heartbreaking. The contraption that was strapped around her torso was made of a heavy hard plastic, like hockey or football equipment. The velcro straps had little pen lines on them, marks to let us know how tight we had to have them in order for them to be doing the job. I can be honest, as I stared down at this tiny little girl (10 at the time) and thought no way, she can’t possibly sleep in that. How close did I come to actually saying that out loud? But no, she had to, and she did and she didn’t complain. She managed to sleep in it. Looking back, this was the easiest time. Before growth spurts, before hips, before they decide that a night brace was no longer good enough, before a thirteen year old girl had to wear that hockey gear under her everyday clothes  for 23 hours a day.  Then it really became heartbreaking.

You know what they say though, “And this too shall pass” … and it did…

” What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” … and it does.

My heart still grieves a little for those 5 years of restraint though, even though I know there are so many worse things happening in the world. So many worse things that people (children) have to endure. I still can’t help but grieve for her a little, remembering this time but also knowing that back pain will always be part of her life.

Becoming a mother was such a magical thing for me but it was also terrifying. How could we (maybe I should call it parenting) possibly be responsible for this tiny, wee person? How was I going to be able to keep that nest from falling? How could I keep this thing safe, fed, happy? At the same time I couldn’t stop looking at that perfect little human form. How was it even possible to make something so perfect? My lips were sore from kissing the tiny little head, feet, fingers. When they cried from pain, I physically felt that pain within me. (I call it the mommy pain and I still get it). It is such a balance, a dance that never ends. We remain parents for the rest of our lives. Once so self absorbed now your brain is split in two equal parts, the love of your own self with the love of your children. They usually win if it means having to make a choice. This is the contract you have signed as a parent, you have willingly signed, they come first. You wouldn’t have it any other way because what you do for them, you really are doing for yourself. It makes sense.Like life, it is cyclical .  I will always be grateful that I was able to experience motherhood, it was touch and go for years but it finally happened for me. I would not be the artist I am today without them.

Haven’t done a corset for awhile but Chris went to a Frida exhibit in NY the other day and saw a display of her decorated body casts. It made me think of Imogen and her collection of braces that she had to wear for her scoliosis treatment. These braces inspired the corset paintings I did several years back. I’m Always trying to romanticize things, to make something ugly more beautiful. I’m actually quite morbid and dark individual and I think I try to counter that by painting beauty and trying to capture whimsy. It’s that ying yang thang don’t you know

These blue poppies are so rare. I was successful last year at actually getting several poppies to grow in my backyard, not blue ones, but I will take what I can get. Poppies just don’t want to grow for me. So, I’ll paint them, whatever, I  do not have a green thumb in the garden but I do in the studio! HA HA.

So this was my second attempt at filming a floral painting for my upcoming PYHAS2019 online course, then it accidentally got partially deleted. I’m not mentioning any names (Chris) because he feels so bad that he was actually trying to buy me furniture we don’t need so I’d forgive him. He’s forgiven, as I actually couldn’t do any of this without him ❤️ but he’s no longer allowed to touch the trash can button on the new camera

You can still sign up for this e-course Here
