Katie Burley hats available HERE.
I really hope Katie doesn’t mind me painting another painting of one of her beautiful hats.
I could NEVER actually own a hat like this. My cat Beijing would go crazy for it. He attacks anthing with feathers, fur or wool. No surprise, he is an indoor cat. Poor thing. Although come to think about it, he doesn’t just go for natural fibres. He has a thing about the girls Ariel doll with the long red hair. He carries her around by her hair. He IS a ginger, so I guess he is partial to red heads.
The Little Princess
This is a 5″x7″ mixed media painting on paper. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.

Deep in thought …

The trapeze artist waits backstage in her feather robe.
Soon, like a bird, she will soar through the air, with the greatest of ease.
Whisper Me Sweet Somethings
This is a 8″x24″ mixed media painting on wood. the sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.
This painting is available HERE
When I was a little girl, I know I have mentioned this before, I would draw for hours, making up stories about the character I was drawing. I would talk out loud to my self. Perhaps reciting the imagined dialogue I was giving them, changing their costumes, hair and make up. This was my favorite thing to do. It was so much fun, I never bored with it.
Sometimes you forget that ‘fun’ part when you grow up. Sometimes you just start going through the motions, not engaged in the moment. Why do we do that, when it is so much more fun to be engaged? To fully immerse yourself in it.
(Ha, ha I could be talking about cooking dinner, couldn’t I? We can just apply this to anything and everything).
This painting is a reminder that, my favorite thing to do is to paint characters. To make-believe these character and then try my best to breathe life into them.
WHISPER ME SWEET SOMETHINGS
She had long tired of sweet nothings.
How many nothings had she heard in her life time?
She longed for somethings to be whispered to her
Slow,steady and sure
somethings
told to her in truth
Lasting somethings
Not
wishing nothings
The Magnolia Hat
This is a 9″x12″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted turquoise. This painting is available HERE.
I love Magnolias. They are the most beautiful trees. Their crooked limbs and thick white flowers. Who wouldn’t want a hat made out of one of these flowers?
Spring really feels like it has arrived. The sun is out, and has been for a few days now. It makes me happy. I can noticeably feel the difference in my mood.
Thanks…
Love all the ideas for foodie movies keep them coming and have a chance to win this months’ giveaway! I found this website that listed their top ten foodie movies. There was some good ones, like Eat, Drink, Man, Woman ( I have to watch that one again) that I had completely forgotten about and they mentioned ones that you guys have already suggested.
I watched the movie Bella last night. Pretty good indie movie. Nice story, although very sad. Parts of this movie revolve around food, Mexican, mmmm…. yum!
Givng You Hopes And Desire For April
‘Hopes and Desires’ is this months giveaway. It is a fine art reproduction of my original. Printed on bamboo paper with archival inks and mounted on a 3″x4″ wood stretcher. (VALUE $25 on ETSY)
So recently I watched the 2001 German movie ‘Mostly Martha’. I have seen it before but not since I have had children. I had forgotten how sad it was, even though it is billed as a romantic comedy. I found myself literally sobbing for the eight year old girl in the movie. I guess that is what becoming a mother will do to you, it is unbearable to watch children suffer. Not that it was bearable before I had children but now, I literally feel physical pain in my heart when I hear about a child suffering.
Besides that, because , that is not what I wanted to talk about, this movie was a foodie movie. Martha is a OCC head chef in an upscale restaurant in Germany. The way she talks about food and the process of making it is just brilliant. I love watching the FOOD channel , I collect cookbooks and EPICURIOUS is my favorite APP on my iphone, so this movie really thrilled me.
Do you have a movie that has thrilled you like this? Taken something that you have a passion for and made it part of the characters’ life or the background through out the movie? OR has a book made you feel this way?
ALSO
If you have anymore foodie movies or books for me, please share. I am having a craving for them…
AND THEN…
I’ll put you name down for the draw at the end of the month and you might just win
your
HOPES AND DESIRES….
Lost In Your Dreams ( A Work In Progress)
This is a 18″x14″ mixed media painting in wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.
This painting is SOLD
This painting is not a work in progress. It is complete. Our subject, however, just may be a work in progress, just as we all are. Living our lives on a day-to-day to basis. Doing the best we can.
I had a lot of things going around my head as I painted this one. I was thinking about how when we are young, we sometimes give up our authentic selves in order to be accepted in a group, or perhaps by a love interest. Sometimes we try so hard to become what we feel we need to be, we totally lose sight of who we really are. We try to blend in, to fit, to please, not realizing that, being untrue to who we really are will never lead to happiness.
As a mother of two young girls, intellectually, I realize that helping my children to have self-confidence and self-respect is crucial. Emotionally, however, I find it difficult when they question everything that I tell them and make choices that I would not make. If I don’t let them make their own choices about these small things at this young age, how are they going to have the skills to make good descion when the stake are higher? If I expect them to bend to my way, all of the time, why would I expect that they wouldn’t bend to other people as well?
It is like walking a tightrope, trying to raise children that are considerate and respectful but also have their own ideas and purpose.
These are the titles that I wrote down as I painted this one:
Falling Into You
Becoming You
Becoming Me
I Become You
You Become Me
Blending In
Falling Into Me
Lost In Your Dreams
Lost In You
Don’t Forget You
And The Winner Is…
… KATIE! Congratulations to you! I love Dogwood trees too!

Awake Within The Dream
This is a 24″x36″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.
This painting is available HERE.
This painting is about living the dream. Really living it. Right now. This instant.
My dream has always been to be a mother; to have children. I tried for five years. Had two operations. Shots. Cried many tears. Made many charts and took my temperature every morning for years.
So here I am, with two beautiful girls and sometimes, I have to be honest, I am often not awake within that dream. I don’t hear them and I don’t see them as I rush by trying to get my day done.
Scarlett’s peaches and cream skin, the curls that spring in to action around the nape of her neck, her amusing look on the world and use of ‘ed’ at the end of words that don’t need an ‘ed’ at the end of them.
Imogen’s biology lesson at dinner every night: ‘Ask me anything about ants (spiders, wasps, butterflies… you name it).’ The way she gazes into your eyes and tells you she loves you. The size of her heart; her compassion knows no bounds.
Look at what you miss when you are not awake in the dream? Blossoms in technicolour. Magic all around. Birds conversing right under your nose.
This is your wake up call.
Awaken within your dream.
Spring Light
This is a 6″x8″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are painted green.

Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush. ~Doug Larson
I don’t mind the slush but I do mind when that said slush freezes over night. It is treacherous out there! I am walking around like an old woman, I am so scared of falling on the ice again. A few months ago, when I was putting Scarlett on the school bus I slipped and fell, only to get up and fall again. Not only was my pride was hurt! I was just grateful that I didn’t break something (LIKE MY WRIST!). I nervously looked up at window of the bus thinking that Scarlett was probably worried about her poor injured Mamma and she was laughing hysterically. To my dismay, the bus drove away, with her laughing and waving. When she arrived home I said to her “You know, Mummy really hurt herself when she fell down today and you laughed”. She answered “I know Mamma, but it looked REALLY funny!”. And, I guess it did. People falling down is pretty classic humor. The incident, however, has left me a little shell shocked. I only wear my gray boots, which seem to have the best grip and I continue to walk with great trepidation.
I am so looking forward to slushy puddles that remain that way overnight so I can walk with a little grace again.
Dress Dummies
This is a 8″x10″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.

I never tire of this subject to paint. It is almost therapeutic painting these human shapes.
March Give Away…
I am missing my spring of days gone by. Snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils … the only flowers in my life right now are the ones that I am painting. January and February have been bitter this year. It is always about this time of year that I really start to miss the season of ‘spring’. Knowing that it is a good few months away isn’t helpful. I shaved my legs and painted my toenails the other day in hope that they may see the light of day soon but alas, I know that this is ridiculous folly on my part. I truly hate my winter coat and boots right now.
I have chosen this reproduction to give away for march.. The subject is more ‘summer’ than ‘spring’ but the colour palette is very ‘springlike’ to me.
So my question to you is, what is your favorite thing about this season? Maybe I can live vicariously through all of you …
Just write you answer in the comment section of this post and I will put your name down for a draw at the end of the month.

This is a little different for me. More illustrative and a bit minimal. No cut out butterflies or flowers. It was hard to leave it like that. Knowing when to stop can be half the battle, hey?

I often look on with love at my children. This is nothing new.

Dreaming Of Spring
This is a 4″x5″ mixed media painting on paper covered canvas. This painting is .5″ deep with turquoise sides.
This painting is $70 and is available here.
On this first day of March, I am dreaming of spring. It is freezing outside and I am beginning to get a little crazy. The last two months have been so cold.
Make. Believe.
This is a 24″x30″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted red.
This painting is SOLD.
Often, at the same time I make art, my children make-believe.
It can hardly be a coincidence that my art is so much about this magical time of dreaming, dressing up, imagination and make-believe. It swirls around my studio/their playroom just as they do in their princess dresses, silk butterfly wings and felted crowns and capes. Their make believe is infectious and it can’t help but make it’s way onto my canvas.
Just the expression ‘make-believe’ is inspirational. Making it real by believing it to be so. Believing it into existence. Three years ago I decided to make my make-believe a reality. Some days are easier than others but I make-believe everyday. I take a blank canvas and I believe it into reality. Make believe is magic time, to make something where nothing existed before is magic.
Art is magic.
Children are magic.
The imaginations is magic.
Go on, I dare you to stop worrying about looking silly, put on your felted crown and cape, and make some magic happen.
Go on….
Make.
Believe.

This was really hard to take a photo of. It is actually very symmetrical. The photo is distorted on the right side making the one girl smaller than the other. They are actually the exact same size. The colour is also darker on the left than it actually is.
I love painting on these unique sized canvases but documenting them kinda stinks.
If you want to see this one in real life, it is at the Highlevel diner until April.
