Young Love- Young Harlequin
This is a 6″x6″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted turquoise.
This painting is $70 and is available HERE.
When I was growing up, I had two framed prints on my wall. They were old, even when I got them, with beautiful gold frames. I am thinking they are from around the 20’s. The were of a young girl and a harlequin in a beautiful garden at night.
I was never sure which picture was first and which one was second. I would lie in my bed and look at these paintings making up stories about what was happening in each picture.
The story would change, I would get confused: Why does he have his mask on in this one and off in the other? why does he look sad? Is he waiting for her or did she just leave him? My story was never complete before sleep would take me.
Perhaps this is why I have a fascination with Harlequins.
Perhaps this is why I always paint first and then make up the story of what is happening in the painting afterward. I am reading my subconscious. Maybe I am just trying to justify my painting by giving it a story.
I still have these framed prints hanging next to my bed but I can be honest, there is seldom a time when I lie in bed looking at them. One weekend morning, while still asleep, Imogen, who is often in my bed by the morning, woke me by saying, “That part looks like a horses head’. She had found an optical illusion within the print.
It made me smile because she must have been lying in bed looking at these prints, just as I did. Two little girls, 30 years apart staring at the Harlequin and his love. It makes me wonder if there was a little girl before me that had done the same thing.
Conversations At Night
This is a 6″x8″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are painted turquoise.
This painting is $75 and is SOLD
The Old Owl is wise, but not a comfort
He seems to speak in riddles
And answers my questions with more questions
He was rather annoying, to be honest
“My Mother has sent me here to see if you can help me sleep”, I implore him.
He turns his head away from me and shrugs.
“Why would you want to sleep at this time of day?”

When frustrated suburban housewife Peggy confronts Karen, an eccentric businesswoman who just happens to have slept with Peggy’s husband, this mismatched duo is sent careening through a wild night of fighting, flirting, gunfire and fishing.
With time for a little girl talk as well. And if luck is on their side there might some well earned retribution before the evening is over. A fun-filled Thelma & Louise for the stage.

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.”
Picasso
Ahhh, Picasso, you were so smart.

“Suspicion”- Lilly Williams
Lilly Williams, alias “Harrington” was a housekeeper arrested for ‘suspicion’ in 1901. Her mugshot is part of a traveling exhibit called Arresting Images through The OOP Museusm.
I don’t know, looking at mugshots of people from the past just sparks my curiosity. There is so much that they look like they want to say. Their eyes haunt me.
This is a 4″x8″ x4″ 3-D mixed media canvas painting.
It is $95 + shipping and is available HERE.
Daydreams (Hold On)

The last painting for my show at The Nina Haggerty Centre For The Arts …it is being hung at this very moment.
Very Excited!
Tomorrow I drop paintings off at The Varscona for my show there. Maybe I should try to stagger my shows a little more in the future! Phew!
Faith – In Progress (Triptych)
This is a mixed media triptych painting on wood, 6″x8″, 8″x6″, 4″x6″. The sides are painted pink ( same pink that is in the painting).
SOLD
Tomorrow I hand over my paintings so they can hang my show. I am really excited now that all the hard work is done.
But…
Part of me wants to just send Chris to drop them off. I can be such a coward sometimes. This is why I feel so comfortable hiding out on the internet. Hiding behind my blog and my etsy store. You don’t have to confront anyone face to face, it is so much easier!
But I can’t do that.
So, I will try to quiet my butterflies and fake it tomorrow. Isn’t that what Oprah said to do?
‘Look how confident I am’.
Hopefully none of them read my blog or my cover will be blown and they will know that I am just a big scaredy cat nerd and not cool, not one -little- bit.
(Although, I have a sneaking suspicion that they may all ready know this, even without this inside information!)
Hope Dreams

Little Halloween Harlequin
This is a 6″x6″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1″ deep and are painted red.
This painting is $65 + shipping and is available HERE.
A little harlequin for Halloween. A little reprise from flowers and butterflies, although I guess I could have painted her with bats flying out from the top of her head. Maybe another day.
There is much ‘Halloweening’ going on in the house today. Both Imogen and Scarlett had to go to school in costume. This year they decided to be Evil Princess, thankfully, as this was a relatively easy costume for me! They looked amazing. I will post pictures later or maybe better than pictures … Halloween night is the night of the MONTHLY REPRODUCTION GIVE AWAY so perhaps they can do the draw in costume! You’ll have to wait and see and if you haven’t put your name down for the draw DO IT NOW!
Butterflies
This is a 24″x72″ mixed media painting on paper covered canvas. The sides are 1.5″ and are painted dark turquoise.
This painting is $2500 and may be purchase directly from the artist maria@mariapacewynters.com
The feeling of having butterflies is a good feeling. Really. It means we are doing something new and exciting. A large part of my life I avoided butterflies at all cost. As I have gotten older, I realize that those butterflies are what life is all about. They represent the ‘good stuff’. Being so ALIVE that you are actually vibrating. I hope that my daughters embrace their butterflies, I know that I will have sympathy butterflies for them through out their lives. Which is great because that means that I am alive X 3!
They Won’t Be Forgotten
This is a 6″x36″ mixed media painting on paper covered canvas. The sides are 1.5″ and are painted red.
This painting is SOLD
I am speaking of dreams. You can’t hide them or deny them. Your buried dreams come back to haunt you in the form of regret. But dreams can be a burden even if you recognize and embrace them daily by trying to accomplish them, once you’ve dreamed them up there is no putting them to bed , they are out there, reminding us of what we hope for and what we are striving for. We constantly hold a measuring stick up against them; am I there yet? Is this what I wanted, or was it something more? To be honest, do we ever really come to the point where we can say, “now I have done it”. We are forever thinking of new dreams, new aspirations, the next goal that we want to achieve. And thank goodness, really, otherwise life would be rather dull. The difference between the burden of dreams unrealized and dreams ignored is regret. The difference between the burden of dreams unrealized and dreams ignored is YOU. Maybe you can feel frustrated or dissatisfied with not actually getting your dreams to where you want them to be but knowing that you really tried, and I mean really tried, is the real difference .
Free
This is a 18″x 36″ mixed media painting on paper covered canvas. The sides are 3″ deep and are painted red, red, red.

The Dreamer (Overwhelming Beauty)
This is a 48″x48″ mixed media painting on paper covered canvas. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are red.
This painting is available HERE
Sometimes I look at my children and am overwhelmed by their beauty. Their beautiful innocence. As a mother I want to try to protect this beauty, to keep it as long as I can. Sometimes I wonder if my protection is a burden that I make them carry around. Sometimes my quest for perfection has opposite result, as with most things, forcing things to work or to fit ‘naturally’ doesn’t often work at all. When you are so uptight about making everything ‘just so’, you can miss all the other stuff. It may not be what you were planning but can be surprisingly better than you ever imagined. Sometimes we can’t possibly dream big enough and we have to know when to let go of preconceived ‘dreams’ and let life unfold. I know that the quest for beauty in my life will never end. I can’t help but romanticize things, it is just who I am. I am a dreamer but I am also a bit a of a control freak. I hope that I can step back and let my children dream too. Their own dreams, not my idea of what their dreams should be.

Faith- In Progress
This is a 9″x12″ mixed media painting on wood.
This is in progress and the working title is ‘faith’ but I am not sure if that is a keeper.
The idea of Faith and the actual word ‘faith’ has been creeping up in my life a lot lately.
Something that you know in your heart even if it doesn’t make sense in your head. This is what faith is. I believe in my heart that my husband has not been given the ability to write beautiful music so that he can work in an office.
This I believe for myself as well. Surely if you are given talent, inspiration and drive you should continue on. Not blindly, no, not blind faith but calculated faith? Perhaps?
The faith to be an artist and know that somehow you are going to be able to pay the bills next month.
The faith that your cat will return after a week.
The faith that you will have enough paintings for your upcoming show.
The faith that those paintings won’t be complete stinkers.
The faith that people won’t see through your confident facade.
The faith that you can keep having the faith.
‘The Cardinal’s Song’ Has Been Chosen…
…as October’s MONTHLY give away! It won by a whopping 52%! The other two were divided pretty equally, although I noticed that the ‘Dreaming Inspiration’ people were less vocal than the ‘I Talked To A Crow’ people. No matter, the winner has been chosen.
SO here is the deal, you write a comment on this blog entry and then, at the end of October, I will have a draw and the winner will be mailed a 6″x8″ OOAK fine art reproduction of ‘The Cardinal’s Song’. Cool huh? And so easy! So do it now!
Hold On
This is a 6″x8″ mixed media painting on wood. The sides are 1.5″ deep and are red.

Look Up

Presently I have so much to do that I can’t possibly look forward in fear of not having enough time, or even worse, back, at time wasted.
My only answer is to look up..
From Silence I Emerge (Diptych)
This is a 18″x18″ and a 18″x36″ mixed media painting on canvas. I am still mulling this one over. Almost done, if not done. The colour in this diptych painting actually DOES match. Not sure what is up with that. I guess I will need to re-do the photo of the bottom one as the colour seems faded while the top one is true. Just thought you might be interested in what I am up to. I think that I like the diptych idea, although I really feel like I have NO perspective of what I am doing right now. A little a bit of not being able to see the forest because of the tree, I think. Well, we all know cutting down the trees isn’t going help so instead I am just trusting that the forest is there and that it will become clearer with a little distance.
(The white band is not part of the painting).
