When you’re in the muck you can only see muck. If you somehow manage to float above it, you still see the muck but you see it from a different perspective. And you see other things too. That’s the consolation of philosophy.

David Cronenberg

I remember as a kid having a balloon and accidentally letting the string go and watching it just float off and into the sky until it disappeared. And there’s something about that, even, that feels very much like what life is, you know, that it’s fleeting, and it’s temporal.

And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.

IF “Rambuntcious”-The Sword Swallower

Everyone said that she was  rambunctious as a child.

Even so, no one expected her to  grow up  to be a sword swallower.

Just Too Small

just-too-small

This is a 24″x24″ mixed media painting on wood.  The sides are painted tangerine.  I actually did this one a few weeks ago but only just got around to taking a photo of it.  If I can’t scan it in, ( just too large! HA!)  I get a little lazy.

This one came about when a woman I am doing a large commission for was talking about empty chairs in paintings or photographs and how they made the individual viewer feel.  It seems that for some people it made them feel sad and lonely and for other it was more welcoming.  I couldn’t get the empty chair out of my head so when I was painting this one I decided to incorporate it.  I made it a kind of ghost like child’s chair.  She seems to be just leaving it to go forward, onward, to something else.  Something more interesting.  Such is life.

How do you feel about an empty chair in a photo or painting?

The Thinker

It is amazing to me how children become who they become so early on in life.  Imogen has always been a thinker.  Very compassionate and sensitive.  When she was less than a year old, you could not sing certain songs to her because they would make her cry.  Really cry, like her little heart was going to break.  Two of these songs were My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean and Momma’s Going To Buy You A Mocking Bird.  As she has gotten older, it hasn’t really changed.  She basically doesn’t like songs sung in a minor key.  This kind of rules out  lullabies.  Maybe that is why we didn’t sleep for that three month period when she was first born!  We thought we were comforting her but we were actually distressing her!   I have since asked her why she didn’t like the Mocking Bird song and she said because the mamma kept taking everything away from the baby.

My friend took this picture of her and  it seems to capture her in a moment of deep thought.  Who knows what she was thinking about at the time, she could have just been contemplating what she wanted to whine about next!  A five year old’s prerogative, you know.

Matthew- Two

I did this ACEO of my nephew Matthew.  He is the cutest.  Two and a half and so smart.  He can count to 20 in english and to 10 in french.  He really is adorable.  The way he looks at you.  He really looks at you.  It is kind of unnerving, like he can see right into your soul.

I must add that although his cuteness is undeniable, he truely is a two year old in every way.  Not unlike my  two year old, Scarlett.

I remember when Imogen,my  five year old was two,  I was amazed at the blossoming of her personality.  I just found it so amazing and as exasperating as she could be, I was so taken with getting to know her that I can honestly say it was my favorite age.

Two year olds are just so cute and it is a good thing because when they kick you, hit you or bite you it makes it easier to keep your cool.  I guess there is a reason for everything.

Lilies

This is a multi media 2.5″x3.5″ original ACEO.
I love lilies. Painting them is a great excuse for buying them. Shhhh…don’t tell my husband.
